However, if my memory serves me well, large unit scale (80 Hastati) supplies an inital 16-man bodyguard, plus 2 per laurel wreath, added at the rate of 1 per turn. It's difficult to quote absolute numbers because it varies according to unit scale. If your FM loses influence, his bodyguard doesn't start deserting him but they won't be replenished if they get killed in battle.
